Whether you've always wanted to give sculpting a try but didn't know the best place to start, or you have some experience and are looking for your next project, this clay sculpting course in Sheffield lets you explore your creativity as you learn some time-honoured sculpting skills.
Based in an old cutlery factory in Sheffield, you'll be hosted at your teacher's light, airy studio space. Replete with examples of her work and images of sculptures dating back to prehistoric times, you'll find plenty of inspiration in your surroundings.
To begin, Mary will demonstrate some core techniques to help you to achieve a figurine structure which you can build on and make your own, including slab building, coiling and pinching. You'll also learn to add the finishing touch to your figurine with imprints and coloured slip.
Everything you need will be provided, and Mary will be on hand throughout each session with tips, advice and expertise to make sure you create a sculpture you can display with pride. Once you have finished your figure, Mary will fire the piece and you will be able to pick it up from her studio within two weeks.
This is suitable for students that have had some experience and would like to have more time to develop their figurine.
If you are new to building with clay or would like to make a smaller figure in one afternoon, check out this class by Mary Sewell.
This class series runs over 2 consecutive sessions, which are 1 week apart.
Mary has been a practising artist for over 25 years, has worked in many educational contexts, and has travelled wide and far.
She remembers having walked amongst the tomb raided sites of Siwa, an urban oasis in Egypt within the Great Sand Sea, picking up remains of funereal wrappings and holding small pieces of the past in her hands. Climbing into the Bhimbetka caves in Madhya Pradesh, she saw some of the oldest cave paintings, made from prehistoric dyes and pigments. From the ancient site of Giza to the beautiful natural forms of the termite structures found in Somalia. The colours and textures of these places, often in and around the desert and rooted in the earth, have stayed with her and found a lasting resonance within her work.
She currently works from her studio at Portland Works providing ceramic workshops for small groups. This old cutlery complex is a wonderful building steeped in history and a fabulous place to work in.
